On Yom Kippur, the morning Torah reading instructs us regarding the sacrifices made on this day during Temple times,  and in the afternoon, about the prohibition covering incestuous relations.

The colorful description of the “scapegoat” offering clearly shows the complex evolution suffered by our rituals towards abstraction and symbolism, devoid of every physical manifestation.

En el día de Yom Kipur la lectura de la Tora nos ilustra sobre los sacrificios de este día en época del Templo –la lectura de la mañana- y las prohibiciones sobre las relaciones incestuosas en la lectura de la tarde.

La colorida descripción del sacrificio del “chivo expiatorio” hace perfectamente patente la compleja evolución de nuestros rituales hacia la abstracción y el simbolismo despojado de toda manifestación física.

Parashat Haazinu, the second to last of the Torah, is made up of 52 verses, 43 of which correspond to Moses’ farewell chant.

As the other poems in the Torah (Jacob’s blessing, Gen 49; the song of the sea, Ex.15; Bilaam’s fable, Num. 22-23; and Moses’ blessing, Deut.33), Haazinu is written in ancient Hebrew, reflected both through the use of archaic grammatical structures and rarely used poetic words.
