Three Jewish players compete for U.S. in the World Cup

Three Jewish soccer players are on the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Jonathan Bornstein and Benny Feilhaber, both 25, along with Jonathan Spector, 24, comprise what could be the largest Jewish contingent on a single team in the U.S. squad’s history.

God does not choose for us

Balak, king of Moab, fears the advance of the people of Israel. He knows that Israel has had several military triumphs in the wilderness, and does not wish to be the next defeated. He understands that he must formulate a plan right away.

Instead of planning to join with other nations as a military strategy, or flee to avoid defeat, Balak decides to hire the professional services of the prophet or warlock Balaam. He sends messages telling him to curse the people of Israel, in the hope that Balaam’s curse will weaken Israel, enabling him to win in the battlefield.

Balak, rey de Moab, teme ante el avance del pueblo de Israel. Él sabe que Israel ha tenido varios éxitos militares en el desierto y no desea ser el próximo derrotado. Entiende que debe delinear un plan rápidamente.

En lugar de planificar una estrategia militar, unirse a otros pueblos en batalla, o huir para evitar la derrota, Balak se dispone a contratar los servicios profesionales del profeta o mago Bilam. Le envía mensajeros para que maldiga al pueblo de Israel, con la esperanza de que la maldición de Bilam debilite a Israel y pueda vencerlo entonces en el campo de batalla.

Results of the poll, commissioned by the grass-roots OneVoice Movement, indicate that 74 percent of Palestinians and 78 percent of Israelis are willing to accept a two-state solution.

Se realizará en Argentina un panel interconfesional relacionado con la Shoá

Itongadol/AJN.- El próximo miércoles se realizará un panel interconfesional sobre el tema "La fe en Dios después de Auschwitz", en la Cancillería. Martha de Antueno, presidenta de la Confraternidad Argentina Judeo Cristiana, coorganizadora del encuentro, aseguró a la Agencia Judía de Noticias (AJN) que “la educación es fundamental” para que la humanidad y en particular “los cristianos entendamos qué pasó en la Shoá” y condenó a quienes se empecinan en negarla.

Searching for Miriam’s Well

In this week’s parashah, among other subjects, appears the death of a great female leader of the people of Israel: the prophetess, Miriam haNeviah. It is written in the text:

And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there. And there was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. (Num. 20:1-2)

Many sages have wondered about the relation between Miriam’s death and the lack of water in the wilderness. It would seem that these subjects have nothing in common; however, many scholars mention a connection.
