Construyendo nuestras propias ciudades de refugio

One of the subjects that appear in Parashat Massei is that of the cities of refuge.  “The towns that you thus assign shall be six cities of refuge in all” (Bemidbar 35:13).  God ordered Moses that the people, once they had entered the land of Israel, build six cities destined for those who unintentionally committed manslaughter.  There, they would be able to escape the wrath of the victim’s closest relatives, who would try to avenge the death of their loved one, until the time when they faced trial.

It is interesting how the Torah concerns itself for those who unwittingly harmed someone, offering them a place where they could find refuge, protection, and safety.  Without a doubt, there is an important message within this concept of the cities of refuge.  All of us, at different times of life, need near us a “city of refuge”, a place where we can feel sheltered, safe, and free from danger.

We may wonder:  Which are those “cities” nowadays?  Where can we find shelter?  In a book?  In music?  In a friend?  In a relative?  Whatever the shelter may be, it is important that it be a safe, not harmful, place.  Unfortunately, in our society, many young people, and adults as well, take refuge in addictions, such as drug abuse, alcohol, work, or others.

Perhaps the Torah wishes to teach that it is very important for each one of us to have a place where we may take shelter whenever we need it.  In this modern society, full of uncertainty, lack of safety and violence, it would be good for us if we could build our own refuges.

According to our sages, the people put up signs or marks on the roads so that those who were desperately searching for such a city, could easily find it.

Do we put up signs to help people who need to find a safe and protected place?

Undoubtedly, our Kehillot (communities) could serve as a shelter for each and every one of us.  A place where we could feel accompanied by family and among friends.  A place that offers strength and support to our lives when we are in trouble.  But also a place where we can enjoy and share our happy times.

When modernity overwhelms us with its violence, oppression, chaos and uncertainty, our Kehillot can offer us atmospheres rich in spirituality, solidarity, study, search for Tikkun Olam, and ethical paths.  For that to happen, it is necessary for us to recognize them as our own “cities of refuge”, while we contribute to their construction and strengthening, and on the other hand, for us to raise signs so that those who feel vulnerable, desperate and lost, may join us in our city and find there peace and friendship.

Throughout the years, our people have become accustomed to living in communities in different parts of the world; that is what allowed us to grow and survive.  In addition, in our times, these should be places where we can feel protected, happy, and loved.

It is up to us that both we and our fellow brothers and sisters can find in our Kehillot true “cities of refuge”.  Let us make them an important place in our lives.

Shabbat Shalom!
