KSI English Speaking Community Iton Blog Column…..

In Celebration of Kol Shearith Israel’s 140th Anniversary:

Searching for Important Family Trees, Documents, Photos and Artifacts

In a previous column I wrote of members and friends of KSI working together in establishing the KSI Jewish Oral History and Archival Projects

Given the excitement generated by the upcoming 140th Anniversary of Congregation Kol Shearith Israel on May 9, 2016, there are many requests being made for KSI archival information.

Our efforts are a work of love and incudes many members.  Rita Sasso and Maritza Lowinger have been accessing the Archives for material to be included in the evening’s program and a just-published La Presna insert. Robert Jacobvitz, Archives Managing Director and student intern Bernardo Baca have led several other dedicated volunteers including Shayna Blum Hodes, Associate Manager, who have been working at a frantic pace since the conception of the oral history/archival vision.  Lyanne Lindo Wassermann, the visionary benefactor, continues to work on the project with Robert from her home in Florida when she is not in Panama.

At this moment, we are making a call for documents that reflect the history of KSI or photographs of founding families to be used for the 140th Anniversary and then incorporated into the on-going Archival – Oral History Project.

Please search your memoirs, and if you feel you have something relevant -- be it a photograph, document, writings, or religious objects you would like to share for this purpose -- use the forms provided for your convenience (Spanish or English) and drop the object/s off at the Synagogue. Robert, Bernardo other project members will receive and log them. The Archives project is housed in the library.

The project team members are at the Synagogue on Fridays from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.  If you would like to arrange a meeting outside of the Friday times, call Robert at 6632-8029. In the event you do not have the ability to bring your items to the synagogue, or prefer to maintain them at home, we can photograph them at home with our portable scanner and cameras.

Please note:  Each object must be written up separately. One per sheet.  Your objects will be returned to you as soon as we have time to: 1) use it in an exhibit and/or scan it for our future Website and permanent file. In the case of a religious object, it will be returned after exhibiting and we have had a chance to photograph it to be scanned.  You may also consider donating it for a museum we are planning to have in the future.

Thank you to all those who have or will contribute for providing us with objects, historic materials  and information that will ensure that the 140th  Anniversary of KSI will be a memorable one, and that the congregation’s place in the history of our beloved Panama and world Jewish history will be recognized and appreciated forever.
