Miembro de KSI en reconocimiento a Justo de la Humanidad realizado en Los Angeles

Robert Jacobvitz, and active member of KSI presented awards to three former State of California Assemblymen and one former U.S. Congressman at ceremonies for their roles in leading passage of legislation posthumously recognizing Portuguese diplomat Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes who issued transit visa to an estimated 30,000 persons fleeing Nazi advancement in France. As a consequence of his effort he forfeited his future to eventually die in poverty and anonymity.   

Former  California Central Valley Congressman Tony Coelho and House Majority Whip and former California Assemblymen Richard Katz, John Klehs and Rusty Areas were presented with mementos of appreciation for their efforts that eventually led to Sousa Mendes being reinstated in the history of his native Portugal as contemporary hero.

According to the Sefer Hachinuch (Rabbi Aharon Halevi from Barcelona, XIII Century), Parashat Mishpatim contains 53 of the 613 Mitzvot.  23 of them are positive (meaning they are accomplished through an action) and 30 are negative (they are accomplished by not doing something).

Tradition defines the Mishpatim as common sense logical laws.  Unlike the Chukim, which are understood as laws provided by God whose meaning is not always clear for us humans, the Mishpatim are generally part of natural law and can be found in most societies.

De acuerdo al Sefer Hajinuj (Rabí Aharon Halevi de Barcelona, siglo XIII) Parashat Mishpatim cuenta con 53 de las 613 Mitzvot. 23 son positivas (es decir que se cumplen mediante una acción) y 30 negativas (se cumplen al no hacer algo).  

La tradición define a los Mishpatim como leyes con sentido común y lógica. A diferencia de los Jukim, que se entienden como leyes dispuestas por Dios cuyo significado no siempre está claro para los seres humanos, los Mishpatim forman en general parte del derecho natural y se pueden apreciar en la  mayoría de las sociedad humanas.

En estas últimas semanas, las lecturas de la Torá nos desafían a probar nuestra fe y nuestra creatividad e intentar vincularnos con un texto que narra algunos sucesos que para la mente moderna suenan difíciles de creer.

Son muy comunes, cuando estudiamos el texto en comunidad, las preguntas acerca de si realmente el mar se abrió como leímos en Parashat BeShalaj o si la teofanía en Sinai sucedió tal cual la describe Parashat Itró, que leeremos esta semana.

In these past few weeks, the Torah readings challenge us to test our faith and our creativity, and to bring us closer to a text that narrates some events that to the modern mind are difficult to believe.  

Questions about whether or not the sea really opened as we read in Parashat BeShalach, or if the theophany in Sinai happened just as it is described in Parashat Yitro that we read this week, are very common when we study the text in a group.  

The contemporary mind –growing further away from poetry and creative reading- has gotten used to reading things in a linear way, stuck in the literal with messages that cannot escape the explicit. The Torah, as the Jewish people for millennia have read it, must allow us to rise from those linear ways of reading and encourage us to understand it in a different manner by expanding the limits of our creativity.  

Primera reunión del año de la Hermandad KSI

La Hermandad Kol Shearith Israel tuvo su primera reunión del año para presentar los proyectos 2016.

La invitada especial de este mes fue la Vice Alcaldesa Raisa Banfield, quien explicó a las asistentes el Plan de la Ciudad que desarrolla el Municipio de Panamá. Temas como la movilidad urbana, la disposición de los desechos y la necesidad de áreas de esparcimiento comunitarias fueron tema del interesante y ameno conversatorio.

En la reunión se presentó además los avances del proyecto para equipar la Biblioteca de la Escuela Estado de Israel ubicada en San Miguelito, conocimos más sobre la beca que la Hermandad otorga a una joven Gnobe que estudia para partera profesional en México, presentamos el nuevo plan de voluntariado KSI junto al Banco de Alimentos y un nuevo proyecto para distribuir uniformes escolares en áreas necesitadas del país.

Festejo Comunitario de Tu Bishvat 5776 “El año Nuevo de los Árboles”

El pasado lunes 25 de enero se realizó en la congregación Kol Shearith Israel el Seder Comunitario de Tu Bishvat “El año Nuevo de los Árboles”.

Con una gran concurrencia, los invitados fueron recibidos con una hermosa y colorida  mesa repleta de frutos, vinos, jugos y un clima muy especial.

En el trascurso de la noche y con la participación de todos fuimos leyendo y explicando los pasos y costumbres del Seder de Tu Bishvat. Además Cantamos, bailamos, jugamos y estudiamos diferentes textos relacionados al Jag.

Celebrando la unión a través de la música

La visita del Papa Francisco hace unos días a la Sinagoga de Roma es un paso más hacia un camino de unión, después de siglos de antisemitismo, Cruzadas, Inquisición y Shoá.

Algo similar ocurrió hace algunos años, cuando el Rebbe de Lubavitch z”l visitó al Dalai Lama, o cuando lo hicieron famosos rabinos y académicos judíos, entre ellos Zalman Schachter Shalomi z”l.

Hay un lenguaje común en toda búsqueda espiritual, que nos permite sumar y no dividir, sanar heridas profundas e intentar no seguir causando más sufrimiento.

Celebrating unity through music

After centuries of anti-Semitism, Crusades, the Inquisition and the Shoah, Pope Francis’ visit to the Synagogue of Rome a few days ago is a very important step in the path towards unity.  Something similar happened a few years ago when the Lubavitch Rabbi z”l visited the Dalai Lama, or when other famous Rabbis and Jewish academics did the same, like Zalman Schachter Shalomi z”l.

There is a common language in all spiritual quests, which allows us to add instead of divide, to heal deep wounds and to try and not cause more suffering.  

On the other hand, we are conscious of where extremisms are taking us.  We though Al-Fatah was the worst, until Hamas came along.  But then we got Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, and now ISIS and their Islamic State.
