Shoshanna Levy Leads a powerful Presentation and Discussion on the Panama Pollera at Recent Book Club Meeting

Shoshanna Levy, Panamanian author and KSI Member led a powerful presentation and discussion at the most recent Book Club Meeting at the home of Sarah and Paul Stern home on Thursday, September 22, 2016.

More than twenty-five members and guests attended, including leaders of SAMAAP, (Friends of the West Indian Museum) and members of a group of enthusiasts organized to preserve the authenticity of the Panama Pollera.

Three members of the group, including Shoshanna wore Polleras. Two designs were from the classic example of dress and adornment and the other was a “contemporary” interpretation of the traditional design. Photos of these dresses are posted in the content of this article.

On tables, Shoshanna painstakingly laid our many varieties of the different layers of jewelry and adornments that are worn with the Pollera. To my embarrassment, I cannot identify by specific name all the varieties of jewelry and their symbolism by wearing, but Shoshi had absolutely no problem!

After a brief introduction Shoshi launched into what can best described as “an enthusiastic” and thorough presentation on the beauty and intricacies of designing and sewing together the different elements that go into producing a pollera.

And as thoroughly as she described the different elements, the questions came flying from men and women. The enthusiasm of the audience was framed in amazement and joy in having a presenter so well informed of her subject matter and willingness to explain every question in minute and informative detail!

Thank you again Shoshanna for a most thorough and so well explained discussion and to your colleagues and friends who joined us as well.

Because of the upcoming Jewish Holidays in the month of October, there will be no Book Club meeting and I hope to resume our meetings in November. Happy and Healthy New Year to all our members and friends. Robert.jacobvitz@sbcglobal.net
